Atticus took his coat off the back of his chair and pulled it over his shoulder
This sentence shows that Atticus has accepted defeat, after putting himself entirely in the open. When he took off the coat, he was throwing everything he had at defending the man he knew was innocent, so when he realised Tom was found guilty, he knew there would be very little chance of him surviving, and so he put his coat back on in defeat.
